It is now a known fact that indiscipline is very rampant
in our schools. We hear of frequent closure of schools and the beating up of
Principals and their staff by students. Most boys and girls in the Secondary
Schools behave quite unseemingly. The modes of dressing, walking and behaviour
show a conflict in norms and call for prompt action by educationists. Thisd situation must be remedied otherwise education
will be meaningless_ if it cannot fulfil its social obligations.
In order to stop this sort of thing the educator must try
as much as possible to instil confidence in his students. The students must
recognise that they are part of the society and are full members of the
community. They must be treated as mature citizens. Their views must be
respected as well as sought for when initiating policy. If this is done,
confidence will be ensured and everybody in the school community will move
mutually and co-operatively too.
Since it is agreed that the main cause of indiscipline is
emotional conflict, it will be a good thing if the school will provide
educational facilities for easing of tensions. Most of our secondary school
students feel disturbed by the drab atmosphere in the school and do
wish to relax and feel a bit free to express themselves or even laugh and
ponder on the foibles of humanity.
It is because of this that good films should be shown periodically to them.
Television sets and other recreational facilities must be provided. But then
the question of television programmes come in: the right sort of thing must be
provided. Otherwise this medium may help worsen of the whole thing. Excursion,
tours and societies must organised. Students must be actively involved in such
endeavours. Most of these things instil
joy and confidence in them and will help to curb their revolting tendencies.
The whole areas of student personnel administration can
be greatly exploited in rearing useful, intelligent and respectful students. If
students are given enough opportunity to lead and take initiative, they may
turn out to be good respectful individuals. Attractive students can be appointed
monitors and other officers of the school. The areas of prefectship and
students’ government point to the right direction.
It might be very necessary to resurrect the dying teacher-parent conference. This has been a very
powerful instrument in making the community know what is going on in the school
and the community. Parents could benefit from the decision which may be made.
They could be shown better methods of solving their problems and others could
learn certain things from the exchange of views.
